Automated SPE Buying Guide
SPE - Solid Phase Extraction - applications can be divided into different categories, according to the field of application and the size of the sample to be purified.
Usually the analysis of biological samples (such as the analysis of Drugs and Metabolites in Blood and Urine) involves small samples (less then 12ml). The analyte extraction by SPE is usually made by means of standard 1 or 3ml SPE cartridges that allow good results in terms of recovery and purification. After the clean-up by SPE, the biological samples are generally directly analysed by LC-Liquid Chromatography.
Concerning food and beverage matrices, sample volumes are slightly higher (12-50ml), so 3ml and 6ml are the most common format of SPE cartridges used for the extraction process. After that, the purified and concentrated samples can be analyzed both by GC and by LC, according to the specific application.
When we talk about environmental analysis, sample volumes are usually higher (up to liters of sample) and cartridges of 6ml (or bigger) must be used to fit this sample quantity. Gas Chromatography is the technique of choice for this type of samples.
Different SPE workstations can be used to automate these different kinds of SPE applications.
